“Don´t think ! FEEL …”

While yesterday was almost only about stretching , push ups and sit ups,

Today started with weight lifting  then stretching and side kick.

I really have to work on my side kick,  so I repeated it as many times as possible trying to feel it right , or better .

After the  training I came to think about when I started with JKD,  I was always thinking too much and looking at myself in the mirror, by that I lost focus, I can´t get of my mind Bruce Lee saying ” Don´t Think! FEEL .. ”

This is also what Micke repeated  several times ” you think too much , just do it !” and now after a couple of years I really understand what they mean… Just do it , again and again until you feel something happening ! …

Now I do my thinking outside the training. 🙂

After each session with Micke I gather all comments I have received and  I practise until I feel a difference.

I don´t mean  that  it looks absolutely perfect then, and that it is all it takes, of course not, but I get it better.

Feeling it is a whole different thing and I am happy to have come to that level.

Sunday 07th

We started with stretching,  we noticed that the kicks have been better lately even if we don´t seem to see any difference when we are stretching, the split is far… far away……..

Remy and Gina facing each other at close range.

. Hook kicks in the stomach, no hard kick hiting the partner, working on  footwork , speed and perfecting the kick´s shape .

. Side kicks, same drill

. Straight lead ( no hit , the punch goes right passed the head) working with the correct body posture and extention of the arm)

Remy and Gina next to each other:

.50 side kicks left and 50 right. Left worse than right as usual, working on the posture and kick shape and speed.  We both have problems with the way our side kicks look like.

Focus mitts:

. 2 hook kicks low+ high no landing in between, both sides

. 5  hook kicks all at the same hight no landing, both sides

. 10 hook kicks at the same hight no landing , both sides

Looks good for both of us 🙂

Kicking Pad:

. Shovel hook around 50, full power , working on the extention, go through. This is Ted´s favourite says Micke. This one is definetely not easy to master.

. Straight lead,  around 50, same here , work on punching hard and deep into the pad and move the pad holder back, hard for me to move Remy but I manage a little bit anyway..

. Cross 50, same drill, this one looks very good for both Remy and I.

. Full speed and power Uppercuts both hands 30 seconds – down and  20 pushups –  up and 30 sec uppercuts – down and 100 situps – up and 30sec  jab/ cross. NO break. This is taking a lot of energy and strenght , but feels great !

. Side kicks… work on it !!!

Thai Pads: Coshe left them to us while he is in the US,  the hardest pads ever!!

. Hook Kicks,  both sides , we cannot give it our full power, but somehow we will have to work on this.

Series:

. Hook kicks series with no landing back and forth on a 6 meter distance.

. Same drill with side kicks.

This one is not easy but you should see 103 kgs Micke doing this like it was nothing, this is ridiculous 🙂

Push ups

. Hands together in the middle, on the fists, on the fingers.

Stretching……….

I felt very tired yesterday after the training, today is the same story as usual  with the muscle pain, but this is not too bad,  I start to get used to it 🙂

I will wait a while after dinner and then do some pushups and stretching, that is about all I can do today, I will spare myself  for tomorrow´s training.

7-03

Today at my place:  Remy, Micke  and myself .

When Remy arrived we talked about being tired, but I felt it disappeared directly as we started. This is really interesting to see  how the training gives some energy. Today went pretty well,  the sunday session is always so intense, the hardest of the week and Micke is always adding some  new drills and lots of variations.

We both received some criticism from Micke  about our side kicks and as we were done with the training,  we even got an ultimatum :

“I want to see  me some good ones next week !”

Well Remy and I know what we have to do this week 🙂

Now I am too exhausted to write :-)…

I will write about the session in details tomorrow….

Filming

I watched my favourite Bruce Lee movie today, “Enter  the  dragon”, after that I decided I needed to check out how my JKD looks like.

I filmed myself training on the heavy bag  and some footwork and on-guard.

Quite important to be able see, that way I can pay attention to details  that I need work on :

Hand before foot,  the way the foot lands, rotation of the leg when kicking..

First thing I think about: this is again and again the same criticism I get from my trainer and also from Ted last year.

Mikael told me recently that it was better  which is good,  but as I can see on film this is still not perfect.

Another thing, I am always very concerned about my flow, I am so impressed by Micke´s flow , he is so heavy but he has such a facility and fluidity, I always ask him how this is possible ? 25 years or so of training would be one thing,  but a  natural  ability is more the reason he says.

I started training when I was 30 , before that I did not train anything at all, ever. No wonder why my body is taking time to adapt to the new way of life, which is a daily training.

I have soon been training JKD privately with Mikael for 5 years now, even if I have a long way to go , there is a big difference in my ability now.

Nowadays I push myself much more, Mikael says he noticed a huge difference lately, I am very happy about that and  I want to feel it even more …. Love Bruce´s line in Enter the Dragon : “DON`T THINK!!!! FEEL….”   🙂

Split!

Oh my god this one is giving me a hard time ! I stretch everyday but this will take time for sure ..

For yesterday´s training I checked Bruce´s schedule, I picked some of his exercises such as:

– Punching with weights.

3sets of 12 straight punch  and cross, this one was tough. I had 3kgs weight on each arm , may be too heavy, but great to test this one.

– Stomach exercises

Waist twists

Sit ups with medicine ball dropings in the stomach and regular

– Forearm exercicses

Leverage bar curl and reverse

– Stamina, Agility

Alternate split ( for as far as I can go of course:-)

Jumping squat , yeah this one I had to try, as I am getting better at stretching I thought this will look kind of OK… but I have some work to do !

To that I added some ” frog jumps”, regular push ups ( 40 in a row ),  push ups with legs on the big Yoga ball ( 40 ) , I just went up from 30 to 40 my goal is 50 before the summer.

Regarding all this,  I also read that Bruce said it is not how many you do it is how you do it, I try to pay attention to the form and make sure I do things right.

I tested sit ups in different ways, I can do 200 regular with no problem seems a bit too easy so I change position and make deeper moves while lying on the yoga ball,  there I can only do 30!

Pretty intresting .. tonight I will have to test more of Bruce´s exercises such as Leg raises and leaning twist and I am quite curious about frog kicks.. 🙂

28-2

Today´s training at my place with Remy, Michel and Micke.

-Focus mitts drills:

. Jab cross hook hook. I am still hurt from last week training so I have to put on  gloves for this one. Later on I will have to get som tape for Remy´s bleeding fist…

. Jab cross hook hook – hook kick , hook kick. Good energy, I feel I have more power and stability.

. High kicks. Seems my daily stretching is starting to pay off as I can reach higher kicks.

-Footwork :

. Try to kick the partner who backs up rapidly. The guys are doing pretty well, we all lack some speed and me more than the others as I train with Micke who is so fast , it is crazy 🙂

. Partner walks quickly forward,  the other one backs up quickly and reaching the wall, changes direction while punching on the pad. Same problem here, need to gain some speed… footwork !!!!

– Heavy bag:

. Rounds 3×30 seconds, full power and speed. First one: punches only, second: kicks only, third: all combinations. I feel really good about this one as I feel I have much more power than before.

. One round 60 seconds, we give all we can,  all techniques and combinations, full power. This one seems very long, good energy for all of us though.

– Lying face down on the floor:

up directly to on-guard position and hook kick on pad, 15 each. I do 14 and then I feel I am gonna through up! But I am getting over it pretty quickly  and  I am back on the floor !

– Pushups and abdominal exercises :

Micke pushes us a lot today, hard training , no time to rest  and no complaining please!

– Hardening:

. Punches and kicks in stomach: I feel I can take more of this, which is good, I am not sure Michel was punching that hard …

. Kicks on legs,   inside and outside:  This is always a “noisy” exercise , I wonder why 🙂

. Hit one another forearm: I am better at this one but when it starts hurting it is hard to keep going on…

 – Split:

the partner is helping with the support while going down, it hurts as usual, it will take some time before we see any improvement for this one I guess..

Bridge:

Michel is mastering this one! I can go up now but I need to go higher, Remy´s back is still hurting.

-“Sit” against the wall.

ok… Michel is down after 44 seconds, Remy after 2 minutes 30 seconds and I complete 5 minutes  …

My legs are hurting a lot and I am exhausted  but I beat the guys at something,  I am happy 🙂

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

After today´s pain I feel I have to get some serious information about that. Here is what I found:

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) describes a phenomenon of muscle pain, muscle soreness or muscle stiffness that is felt 12 to 48 hours after exercise, particularly at the beginning of a new an exercise program, after a change in sports activities, or after a dramatic increase in the duration or intensity of exercise.

This muscle pain is a normal response to unusual exercising and is part of an adaptation process that leads to greater stamina and strength as the muscles recover and build hypertrophy.

There is no proven effective method to reduce or avoid the pain, but gentle stretching or even anti -inflamatory medication such as aspirin, can be helpfull for me together with  a warm bath , but it helps just for a little while.  I did not find anything on the internet that is proven effective, some tricks help some people and not others,  it is more how the individual react to different and own methods.

What I really want to know is why do I have to go through this every single week? This is a normal reaction after unusual exercise or change of activity. Well after 4 years what is unusual about what I do ?  In this case this is related to the fact that I give much more during those sessions than before , increasing intensity must be  why I get this.

I found myself some light about this today and even if I feel I have been hit by a truck , it feels good to know why  🙂
